Many customers ask us whether they need to bring their physical key for duplication or if they can simply send a picture or provide a key number. The short answer is: it depends. Below, we explain the different methods of key duplication and the conditions that must be met for each.
1. Cutting by Key Number (Key Code)
If your key has a code number (often found on the key itself or provided when the lock was purchased), we may be able to cut a new key using our Silca electronic key-cutting machines. However, two important conditions must be met:
- The key code series must exist in our database or in our Silca electronic key-cutting machines.
- We must have the correct key blank that matches your lock perfectly.
If both conditions are met, we can cut a new key with high precision without needing the physical key.
2. Cutting by Key Picture
In some cases, we may be able to duplicate a key from a clear and properly taken picture. However, this method has several limitations:
- The code series exists in our system, and the required key blank is available.
- The photo must be taken in good lighting with a straight-on view, showing all the cuts and grooves clearly.
- The technician must be able to visually determine the depths and spacing of the cuts, which requires skill and experience but is not 100% foolproof.
- The key blank must be available, and the key must not have a restricted or patented profile.
If the picture is blurry, taken at an angle, or lacks detail, it may be impossible to duplicate the key accurately.
3. When It Is Difficult or Impossible to Duplicate a Key Without the Physical Key
- Unknown or brandless locks/keys: If the key does not have any branding or identification, and the customer cannot provide any details, it is nearly impossible to determine the correct key profile and cutting pattern.
- Restricted or patented keys: Some keys are designed with security restrictions and cannot be duplicated without proper authorization or special key blanks.
- Worn or damaged keys: If the key is heavily worn or damaged, duplication by picture or code may not be accurate.
- Custom or rare key profiles: If the key belongs to a lock system that is not commonly used or is a proprietary design, obtaining a blank or determining the cutting pattern can be extremely challenging.
Conclusion: Do You Need to Bring Your Key?
- If you have a key number, check with us to see if we can cut it from the code.
- If you only have a picture, make sure it’s clear and meets the conditions mentioned above.
- For the best results and to avoid wasted time, we always recommend bringing the physical key whenever possible.
If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us, and we’ll advise you on the best approach for duplicating your key.
